  8.     So I was eavesdropping on yet another conversation at 
  9. lunch the other day and I overheard some overly made-up, motherly 
  10. looking woman talking to some of the other employees who were 
  11. outside smoking cigarettes. In a holier-than-thou voice, 
  12. announced, "You know, they say that every cigarette you smoke 
  13. takes seven minutes off of your life."
  14.     Of course the smokers looked at her stupidly and dismissed
  15. her entirely, but that statement actually got me thinking. It 
  16. made me wonder who "They" are and what gave Them so much clout.
  17. How many people have you heard say, "They say that it's bad for 
  18. you to go swimming within a half an hour after eating." And how 
  19. many people adhere to that religiously? Personally, I have never 
  20. seen any medical reports with empirical evidence stating that the
  21. effects of water on undigested food are detrimental to ones' 
  22. health. 
  23.     And how about this one: "They say that if you drink beer 
  24. before you drink hard alcohol, it will make you sick." Now, there 
  25. is actually some evidence that this is true, (nothing documented 
  26. that I am aware of, though) but it really gives me the creeps that 
  27. the general public, as a whole puts so much faith in what They say. 
  28. Even though most of Their claims are considerably trivial, it  
  29. causes one to notice how blindly people trust these unnamed pundits.
  30. These pseudo-experts of virtually everything.
  31.     I mean, hearing a "They say" warning can definitely warrant
  32. a certain amount of caution, but what kind of pathetic, weak minded
  33. lemmings are we to go jumping off a cliff just because They say 
  34. that there is something even more dangerous behind us.
  35.     Even more terrifying are the alleged "facts" that everyone
  36. seems to know all about. I can't even count how many times someone
  37. told me something they claimed was a fact that I either knew was
  38. bullshit or I later found out was untrue. And if you don't believe
  39. that people are so easily led by lies, try this little experiment
  40. sometime. Tell someone something silly, like "You know, cabbage has
  41. five times the vitamin C of an orange." Now, make sure you follow
  42. this little tidbit up with "It's a well known fact." Most people
  43. will either agree with you like they already knew that or they will 
  44. just look at you stupidly, too afraid to ask questions about 
  45. something that they are apparently supposed to know about, but
  46. don't. They won't rebut your claim of facthood and they won't even
  47. bother to check it out for themselves. If you find yourself someone
  48. who actually challenges the lie; Congratulations. You found some
  49. intelligent life. This person is your friend.
  50.     It's funny how you can join Their ranks just as long as you 
  51. know how to bullshit. Yes, you too can be an expert on any subject. 
  52. Just TELL people you have expertise and you're in. Pretty sad.
